Bridge league official wins award

The American Contract Bridge League recently named Charles Gill, the president of the St. Petersburg Bridge Club in Pinellas Park, the National Volunteer of the Year for 2012.

Gill, who lives in St. Petersburg, traveled to the Memphis, Tenn., March 19 for an award ceremony during the North American Bridge championships.

The league claims more than 165,000 members throughout the United States and Canada, with more than 3,200 affiliated bridge clubs. Each year, it honors the volunteer efforts of one of its members.

Gill has headed the St. Petersburg Club since 2004. During that time, the club has grown from 200 to more than 500 members, making it the largest bridge club in Pinellas and Hillsborough counties.

Under Gill’s leadership, the club has added a strong teaching curriculum and now offers more than 20 bridge games and instructional classes each week.

The club also has been chosen to host numerous regional and statewide championship tournaments at its facilities at 8800 49th St. N., Suite 110, in Pinellas Park.
