2007 SMEG World Bridge Championship begins in Shanghai

On the afternoon of September 28th, the 2007 World Bridge Team Championship held a press conference. The competition will be held from September 29th to October 13th at the Shanghai International Convention Center. The competition was hosted by the World Bridge Federation, jointly organized by China Bridge Association, Shanghai Sports Association and Shanghai Wenguang Group. 66 teams from 30 countries and regions will participate in the 38th Bermuda Cup, the 16th Venice Cup and the 4th Senior Cup. There will be about 150 teams participating in the 6th Transnational Open Team.


The World Bridge Team Championship is currently the highest level event in the world and is held every two years. Competitions include the Open Group (Bermuda Cup), the Women's Team (Venice Cup), the Senior Cup and the Multinational Open Team Competition. The teams participating in the first three projects were produced by the member countries of the World Bridge (or regions) through the participation in the trials in their respective districts, with 22 teams participating in each project. The multinational open team competition has been included in the World Bridge Team Championship since 1997. The teams are free to register and have no nationality restrictions. The Chinese women's team won the runner-up in the Venice Cup in 1997 and 2003, and the Chinese men's team won the runner-up in the multinational open team competition in 2003.


The Shanghai Wenguang Chinese men's team who played in the Bermuda Cup had the first pair of world champions Fuzhong/Zhao Jie of China Bridge, and the other two pairs of players Wang Xiaojing/Sun Shaolin, Shi Haojun/Zhuang Zejun also played for many years in the competition. The Global Women’s Chinese Women’s Team, composed of Gu Ling/Zhang Yalan, Wang Wenzhao/Liu Yiqian, Sun Ming/Wang Hongli, is the favourite of the Venice Cup.


The game will be held for 14 days and will end on October 13. The Shanghai TV Sports Channel will broadcast the game live and the game will be broadcast online.
