World Bridge Championships 2015 – Visit by the World Bridge Federation

February 21, 2014

Acknowledging the growing importance of India as a Bridge center,  the WBF has decided to award India the opportunity to host the World Bridge Championships in 2015. A delegation from the WBF was in India from 17th-19th February to inspect and assess the available venues and facilities. The delegation comprised

  • Mr. Giannarigo Rona, Italy, President, WBF (Delegation Leader)
  • Mr. Mazhar Zafri, Pakistan, Vice President, WBF
  • Mr. Marc De Pauc, Belgium, Treasurer, WBF
  • Mr. Maurizio Di Sacco, Italy, Championship Committee Chairman

The team visited both potential venues – Chennai as well as Goa. A packed itinerary was arranged for them, coordinated by Mr. NR Kirubakara Moorthy, President, BFI and assisted by Mr. R Rajagopalan, Vice President, BFI as well as Mr. Prasad Keni, Vice President, BFI.

The tentative host venues that have been identified are the ITC Grand Chola in Chennai and the Grand Hyatt in Goa. The team assessed the suitability of these venues to host the championships and also inspected other hotels in their vicinity which will also be required to house the participants.

The team had very positive feedback regarding both venues and will continue their deliberations before making a recommendation to the WBF Council. They have invited the BFI to make a presentation on Chennai to the WBF Council in Dallas, USA in March 2014 as the Council has already seen a presentation on Goa in Bali.

Now, the ball is in the BFI’s court to obtain support from all necessary Government Ministries, identify key sponsors and to ensure that the Indian bridge fraternity is able to host an event of such scale and magnitude.
