Nearly 50 local bridge players filled the Bob Chisholm Community Center on June 21 to help raise funds for Alzheimer’s research.
The team game was part of the American Contract Bridge League’s participation in The Longest Day – a sunrise-to-sunset effort on the summer solstice to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Association.
“We say people who play bridge don’t get Alzheimer’s,” said Sharon Cummings, who helped to organize the local event.
Cummings said the ability of people all over the world to play bridge made it easy for the national sanctioning organization to plan this tournament.
Teams attending were attracted from throughout the North Coast and as far away as the Southwest Washington Coast.
Twelve teams of four signed up. The game raised its usual fee from $4 to $6 and encouraged additional donations for charity.
Sue Kroning, club manager for the Seaside Duplicate Bridge Club, and one of the tournament’s organizers, said the group ultimately raised about $700 for charity.
The local bridge club hosts weekly games at the community center every Friday afternoon and Saturday morning. Interested parties are encouraged to attend.
“We’re always looking for new players,” Kroning said.
