Blacksburg Bridge Club to offer free lessons in April
Mar 24, 2014

Three times a week, a group of card players meet at the Blacksburg Recreation Center for some friendly competition. They join a host of people across the globe who would say that Duplicate Bridge is the greatest game ever devised. And, they're the calm ones. Others consider it to be more of an addiction. Any way you look at it, on any game day afternoon, you'll hear plenty of conversation and more than a few laughs floating down the halls of the recreation center.

It seems only fair to warn the reader at the outset that learning Duplicate Bridge will absolutely ruin your life. Ask any of the Blacksburg players who are already hopelessly addicted to this infuriatingly fascinating game. Some drive one-and-a-half hours to get to the games. They'll tell you firsthand how Duplicate Bridge has warped their lives - but it's a great bending experience.

The Blacksburg Bridge Club is now offering lessons on how to play duplicate bridge and probably just as important how to to play modern bridge. Over the last 10 years, bidding techniques have changed dramatically to provide more variety to the game and more competition on every hand. This is a friendly, easy, no-nonsense way for you to learn. Beginning April 1, there will be four lessons on consecutive Tuesday afternoons from 1 to 3 pm at the Blacksburg Recreation Center. The lessons are free, and no prior registration is required.

Maybe you learned the game yet ago but have not played much recently. Or you have been playing the same way for a long time and would like to improve your skills. Or you figured the game was only for those with white hair until your roommate started playing and winning. These lessons are for you. You'll learn new techniques, and you'll spend a few more hours laughing and arguing about past deals.

Do not be fooled. No doubt, you'll regret ever learning Duplicate Bridge, but at least you have been warned. You'll find it impossible to stop thinking about the last hand you played or when the next game will be ...... see you at the Blacksburg Rec Center!
