In the prestigious RUIA Gold finale of four segments, Poddar Developers (Dipak Poddar(c), Anal Shah, Milind Athavale, Subhash Dhakras, Ramavtar Agarwal, Rajendra Gokhale)played consistently well to defeat the strong in form Team NRK (Nrk Moorthy (C), Uttam Gupta, Bhabhesh Saha, Shamboo Ghosh, Biswajit Poddar) by a margin of 29 imps. Earlier in the qualifying league rounds, TEAM Nrk had dominated the field winning each match.
In the other Final, Dr Sanghi’s team (Dr. RL Sanghi, Asha Sharma, Joyrup Mullick, Binod Shaw, Piyush) had a neck to neck encounter against Team Cossipore (Priya Ranjan, Chinmay Goswami, Kalyan Roy, Achin Choudhary, Partha Saha, Rajendra Ray) but finally succeeded to win by a marginal difference of 9 Imps.
The Shree Cements matchpoint pairs finale witnessed the most competitive bridge among most of the top qualifiers where it was anybody’s chance to outperform the others as the closing rounds came by. The Opening rounds were dominated by the formidable pair of Kiran Nadar – B Satyanarayana. After lunch break, the Young Railway Rookie Anindra Sarkar – Debashish Bose went on a spree with a session average of 69% or more thereby clearing their success path all their contenders to lead the field. However, Mrs. Kiran Nadar and B. Satyanarayana made a strong comeback and it was an exciting last round photo finish where they pulled up their socks to barely overtake the veteran pair Padmanabhan Sridhar and Keyzad Anklesaria after correction time.
In the Silver Pairs finals, the pair of Sukanta Das and Kamal Naguri locked their dominance for the entire session after lunch break and topped with a score of 62.5%. Mrs. Jeroo Mango and Ivan Alphonso of Mumbai were runners-up.
The Niranjan IMP finals was won by Jaggy Shivdasani and Sandeep Thakral in a photo finish. They overtook the old firm of R. Krishnan & B. Prabhakar on the final board of the tournament to emerge victors.
In the Ladies selection event, Bharti Dey and Vasanti Shah comfortably outclassed the opposition. The other 2 pairs to qualify for the selection trials were Rupa Bakeri/Alka Kshirsagar and Pooja Batra/Monica Jajoo. The Chennai pair of Raksha Mehta and Sushi Natraj missed out narrowly on the qualifying berth. All the three qualifiers have been past representatives of India.
In the Mixed Pairs event, there was a phenomenal participation of 60 pairs which justified the move for the federation to keep this event on a standalone additional day. The event attracted the interests of major stalwarts as there were quite a few partnerships built overnight as well some of them had specially flown down to attend this qualifying event. After the end of 2 sessions, the qualifying spots were gathered by the fresh dough partnerships lead by Meenal Thakur – Sandip Dutta who won the trophy while Bimal Sicka – R Krishnan were the Runners Up.
