The Chinese team that achieved a historic breakthrough in the 2006 World Bridge Championship returned to China on June 26. In the Bridge World Championships that ended on June 24th, Fuzhong/Zhao Jie of the "Shanghai Wenguang" Chinese Men's Bridge Team won a small advantage in the open doubles final and won the first world championship in the history of the Chinese Bridge team.
The 2006 World Bridge Championship was held in Verona, Italy from June 9th to 24th. The World Bridge Championships are held every four years and are the largest and most successful competitions organized by the World Bridge Federation. The Open Doubles is the oldest competition in the World Championships. A total of 394 pairs of players participated in this open doubles competition. The contestants will pass the 120 deck preliminaries and 120 decks of rematches, and 72 pairs of players will be selected to enter the finals. The three pairs of Chinese players entered the finals of the Open Doubles directly because they reached the top 8 in the previous open team competition. In the final, Fuzhong/Zhao Jie played well and remained in the first group, eventually winning the championship with 56.84% of the outstanding results, leading the second place by 0.43 percentage points.
Fuzhong/Zhao Jie’s victory not only rewrote the history of the Chinese Bridge men’s team never winning medals in the World Bridge, and it is also the first world champion in the history of Chinese Bridge. In addition, Wang Wenzhao/Wang Hongli of the China Women's Bridge Team of the Global Times won the runner-up in the previous double-double, which is also the best result of Chinese women's players participating in this competition.
